Year(s) : 2008
Grant Recipient Type : NGO / Nonprofit
Grantor : World Lung Foundation (WLF)
Project goal : To explain the benefits of smoke-free restaurants and bars following the implementation of a smoke-free law.
Direct Grant : Yes
Key achievement to date:
Compliance in smoke-free Mexico City has
remained very high with very few incidents.
Self-reported exposure to second-hand smoke
fell significantly between March and August
2008, from three in 10 to one in 10. The
proportion of respondents reporting no exposure
to second-hand smoke "in the previous 30 days"
doubled from 19 percent to 40 percent.
Additionally, most indicators suggest that,
after the law came into effect, restaurant,
bars and cantina businesses in Mexico DF
performed better than elsewhere in the country.
For instance, turnover and gross profits for
bars and cantinas grew in the five months from
April to August 2008, compared to the same
period the previous year, and grew more rapidly
in Mexico DF than in the country as a whole.
Restaurants in DF also outperformed those
elsewhere in Mexico, with gross profits up -
though there was a marginal dip in
turnover.
Major accomplishments to date:
- A survey in Mexico City revealed high
awareness of the smoke-free law and increasing
agreement that patrons and workers have the
right to breathe air free from tobacco smoke.
