Key achievement to date: In 2010, the Department aired two public service announcements titled: “Dhuaan” and “Child,” which highlighted the harmful effects of secondhand smoke as well as the need for smoke-free public places including business and food establishments. According to the latest Global Adult Tobacco Survey conducted in India in 2010, 27% of adults (age 15 and above) are exposed to secondhand smoke at work. The aim of the SmokeFree Chennai project was to protect citizens from exposure to the toxic cancer-causing agents found in secondhand smoke. The campaign also informed smokers about the personal consequences of their own actions and the harm they cause others.
